Great minds remember alike?
One
article about Bell's MyLifeBits project, from 2003, tells us:
The software is bound to be superior to standard ways
of holding on to memories -- photographs in a shoebox, for instance
I've had that article in my bookmarks for years, though while preparing this column
I returned to it not via those bookmarks, but through a series of links. When
I restumbled upon it, I'd already chosen the shoebox metaphor for the title to
this column. I suppose that it's an unavoidable metaphor, and it must show up
numerous times in the many articles written about Bell and his project. I hope,
however, that I've succeeded in generating a bit of respect for such a low-tech
object which seems to have been unjustly maligned.
