Sort of like gophers?
I still do a bit of teaching of internet basics, but those basics have changed.
Today, I'll barely mention directories and will instead devote more time to search
strategies. As I've noted before (I think the last time was about a
year and a half ago, but I've probably done so numerous times over the years),
a good web directory is hard to find today. Search technologies have simply totally
eclisped the meticulous, hand-made process of constructing a worthwhile catalog.
There truly are certain advantages to catalogs over search engines, but I'm not
sure that those advantages merit bemoaning the demise of catalogs as we might
bemoan the demise of Mom and Pop restaurants that were eclipsed by fast food joints.
There are good reasons for the victory of search engines. Then again, fast food
isn't always all that bad either.
