This particular piece of internet history also arrived during the preparation
of this column. What can I say? Simply the fact that it's still making the rounds
suggests that we netizens don't seem to possess much collective intelligence:

This time, contrary to my
general policy, I won't post the whole thing. Most readers will recognize
it as the first part of the letter they've already received numerous times telling
them that Bill Gates really wants to give us some of his money. I usually post
full copies of items that I'm fearful are going to disappear from the web. In
this particular case, there's sadly little reason to fear that that's about to
happen anytime soon.
