I ran a search on that too.
Numerous dictionary sites tell us that ped-xing is a contraction for pedestrian
crossing. And so it is. I wasn't aware, until I tried to find verification for
my own recollection of where I learned the term, that it's also the name of a
pop star or group.
I think I first read the term as a synonym for putting
one's shoulder to the wheel and nose to the grindstone, to getting down to doing
the necessary work at hand, in Raymond Mungo's Famous
Long Ago. It doesn't show up in the Online
Etymology Dictionary, though somehow I didn't expect to find it there.
My searches haven't found any additional instances of ped-xing being used as Mungo
used it. There are probably some out there, but I'm not about to do the necessary
foot work (or click work) to find them.
