Continually evolving.
From an original portmanteau (and yes, we've been
there before) of producer and consumer, the term has continued to
develop, and today it derives an additional meaning from professional and
consumer. A popular example is the family that used to be more than satisfied
with the simple instamatic camera that shot family pictures, but that, as the
technology improved, and prices went down, purchased a 35mm camera with a zoom
lens and all the trimmings. And of course this trend continues with inexpensive
software that permits us to do professional cropping and editing from our desktops.
When I think of prosumers, however, I still envision the merging of production
and consumption.
