How much is enough?

I'm not really sure how a single "researcher" (and that certainly isn't me) would go about keeping tabs on the growth and/or the changes in an index, especially if it doesn't offer statistics upfront and center. There are probably tools that could do some sort of statistical analysis for me, but I'm not familiar with these. Perhaps somebody is offering research grants for this, but I'm not aware of that either. So this becomes a sort of late-night project that, if I've finished my more pressing tasks, and if I'm not too tired, I might try to keep tabs on. But of course the problem with doing this is precisely that it's not consistent enough to make whatever data I might be able to glean actually worthwhile.

Which is, I suppose, why I write a column instead of doing research.
