In Moliere's classic Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (some English translations
make it The Bourgeois Gentleman, while others perhaps modernize a bit and call
it The Middle Class Gentleman) Monsiour Jourdain discovers that he doesn't just
speak:
By my faith! For more than forty years I have been
speaking prose without knowing anything about it, and I am much obliged to you
for having taught me that.
Interestingly, I often find opportunities to comment along the lines that "we
didn't know we were speaking prose", expecting that anyone who hears it will
know where it's from, or at least identify the intent. Often I get the feeling
that the person I'm speaking to has no idea what I'm referring to.
