Staying close to the elemental.
In a previous apartment of mine, an artist friend offered to install an earthline,
entering at a window at the back of the apartment, running along a wall, and exiting
at a front window. His reasoning was that in order for us to maintain a close
connection to the earth (truly a fundamental part of our lives) we should have
such a line passing through our homes. This wouldn't be something that we tapped
into in order to get some dirt (along the lines of "let's turn on the earth
tap for a moment") but instead something we could reflect upon. In other
words, an interesting conceptual art project. I seem to recall that in the apartment
he lived in back then he'd installed such a line - by spreading glue along a line
in his apartment and then casting earth onto that line. The idea was enticing,
but I declined the offer - it seems to me that when he moved to a larger apartment
he didn't install a new line of this sort either.
We often have a line of ants entering at one spot in our home and marching through
the house until they exit at the other side. Sadly, not only isn't this an art
project, but it's the sort of line I'd be more than happy to do without, if we
could figure out how to get rid of them.
