British Chevening Scholarships 2006/2007

The British Chevening Scholarships offered every year by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), to enable promising young Israelis to spend between three and twelve months in the United Kingdom for post graduate study or research. The British Council administers these funding schemes on behalf of the British Embassy in Israel.

This information is to colleagues whom would benefit from pursuing post-graduate studies in the UK.

All fields of study are considered, but priority is given to subject areas related to politics and government, conflict prevention, regional and economic development, law and human rights, environment, media, business and economics, information technology and applied science.

We are now inviting applications for the academic year 2006/7.  The FCO is particularly interested in applicants who, in addition to academic excellence, show leadership potential, strong motivation, good communication skills and an interest in contributing to Israeli society.

  1. Portland Trust – Chevening Scholarships

This scheme consists of four awards for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. Priority for the awards will be given to students who wish to explore ways in which economic development and co-operation could assist the Middle East Peace Process (MEPP). Two awards have been assigned for Israeli candidates and two for Palestinians.  The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (represented locally by the British Embassy in Tel Aviv and the British Consulate-General in Jerusalem) is particularly interested in applicants who, in addition to academic excellence, show leadership potential, strong motivation, good communication skills and an interest in contributing to their respective societies.

  1. Lord Goodman – Chevening Scholarship for Research or Study in the Environment

This scheme has been running since 1995 and focuses on areas of the environment such as global warming, conservation programmes or legal, scientific, political, economic or social issues at a local, national, or regional level, of relevance to the environment.

  1. UCL Israel Alumni – Chaim Herzog/Chevening Award

UCL Israel Alumni Association, together with the British Embassy in Israel, has established a Scholarship in memory of the late President Chaim Herzog, who was himself an alumnus of University College London. The scholarship offers an opportunity to one outstanding student to study for twelve months at University College London.

Preference will be given to subject areas related to the life, interests and achievements of the late President Chaim Herzog, such as public policy, economics or history.

The deadline for submitting completed applications for all the schemes is 19 December 2005.
