Towards Optimal Petascale Simulations Esmond G. Ng Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Towards Optimal Petascale Simulations” (TOPS) is a project funded by the SciDAC Program at the US Department of Energy (DOE). The project, which focuses on solver technology, involves partly research and partly software development. The solvers under consideration include those for linear and nonlinear equations, eigenvalue calculations, and PDE-constrained optimization. The project is also concerned with the deployment of the solver technology in many thrust areas of DOE, such as accelerator modeling and design, subsurface reactive transport, quantum chromodynamics, fusion energy research, and materials science. An important goal of the project is the research and development of scalable solvers that will allow large-scale scientific simulation codes to run on forthcoming petascale computer architectures. In this presentation, the scope of TOPS and some of its on-going work will be discussed.
