"Freezing of Atoms and Bose-Einstein Condensation"

Prof. Eric Akkermans
Dept. of Physics, Technion

The aim of this colloquium is twofold. First, to review the various cooling mechanisms (Doppler, Sysiphus etc.), the physics of optical molasses and the way that led to the observation of the Bose-Einstein condensation. Then, we shall discuss some of the features of this new state of matter (e.g. superfluidity) and various ways to characterize it. Finally, we shall discuss the problem of Anderson localization in
cold atoms.
