"Traffic jams and ordering far from thermal equilibrium"

Prof. David Mukamel
Department of Physics of Complex Systems, Weizmann Institute

Phase transtions in one-dimensional driven systems are discussed. It is shown that unlike systems in thermal equilibrium, driven systems can exhibit phenomena like phase separation whereby macroscopic high density phase coexist with a low density one. Models of traffic flow and traffic jams are considered within this framework.
