Objectives - Recommended literature

Your objective is to learn about surface free energy, adhesion and wetting by measuring the contact angle of a liquid on a surface. Specifically, you will measure:

  1. The wetting angle of a series of liquid drops on a polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) substrate, to determine its surface tension (Zisman Plot).
  2. The change in wetting angle of water on Teflon as the concentration of surface-active substances in water is increased.
  3. The weeting angle of water on a pure and hydrophobized copper surface.
