RESEARCH INTERSESTS
Molecular evolution and phylogeny: inferring evolutionary and co-evolutionary dynamics, developing and applying probabilistic evolutionary models.
Evolution of microbial species:
Genome scale evolution of microorganisms: the role of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in adaptation and the factors that determine gene's transferability.
Correlating microbial gene content shifts with changes in habitat and traits: discovery of correlations between acquisition of novel gene families and transformation into virulence strains.
Metazoan evolution:
Analysing Indels phyletic patterns to study Eutherian phylogenetic relations.
Evolutionary dynamics in linguistics:
Studying the evolutionary relations among languages: analyse the dynamics of gain and loss of lexical units (cognates) among neighboring languages as mechanism explaining language innovations.
