DVD's for Effective Teaching in Higher Education Two DVDs, each with about two hours of video clips of theoretical background, classroom teaching and interviews with teachers, identify and demonstrate strategies that 24 award-winning teachers at Stanford University use for giving exciting lectures that are clear,, highly engage students, challenge them intellectually, and activate their thinking. The DVDs can be used individually by faculty members for self-improvement of own teaching, and by faculty developers to conduct a variety of faculty workshops. The Researcher-Producer: Dr. Nira Hativa has been a professor of higher education and a faculty developer at Tel Aviv University (TAU) and was also involved in faculty development at Stanford University. Her research has concentrated on effective instruction in higher education. She is now the head of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching at TAU.

Summary of ContentsDisc 1: Making Lessons InterestingThis DVD demonstrates presentation techniques that capture students' attention and promote learning.The first part illustrates the uses of verbal and nonverbal communication for gaining and maintaining students' attention, shows the impact of dramatic behavior, and the importance of varying presentation methods. It also demonstrates how to make content provocative and memorable through the use of dramatic illustrations, visual aids, suspense and surprise, and self-disclosure, and by challenging students intellectually. The second part suggests how to actively engage students during a lecture by posing questions and creating opportunities for students to talk and listen, read, write, and reflect during class. It covers such methods as discussion, collaborative learning, small-group work, role-playing, simulations and more. It also illustrates how to promote students' thinking and challenge them intellectually. Disc 2: Clarity in Teaching & Classroom EnvironmentClarity in TeachingThe first part presents strategies for simplifying the new material by teaching it in two or more cycles whereas the first of these is a simplified, easier-to-understand version, by structuring and advance-organizing the topics presented, by teaching in small steps, and by looking back.The second part suggests strategies to adapt instruction to students' diversity. This, by identifying students' background knowledge, experiences and aptitudes and complementing deficiencies in prerequisite knowledge, evaluating students' understanding continuously throughout the lesson, linking the new material to students' background knowledge, and adapting the presentation to students' aptitudes.
