Before babies entered your life
you might not even have known what a board book was — and now you probably
can't imagine life without them. This chunky, cardboard-page book format
offers a great way to introduce books to babies — and is wonderful for
reading and rereading, gnawing, carting along on car trips, and even for
playgroup tug-of-war.
Some
of the best
Max's Bedtime, by Rosemary Wells
Max the toddler rabbit conveys childhood charm and controversy in just a
few words. Parents of those one and up will love him, too. Go to sleep,
his matronly sister Ruby says. But Max cannot relax...
Noah's Ark, retold and illustrated by Lucy Cousins
The drawings are folksy, paintbox-bright renderings of all God's
creatures, and the text is just as appealing — 19 simple, serious (but not
somber) sentences readily absorbed by ages one and up. Our favorite
octopus ever is toward the end.
Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?, by Dr. Seuss
"Oh, the wonderful sounds Mr. Brown can do" in this version of the
original. The shabby old gent can imitate clocks, thunderstorms, and
butterflies. "Why don't you try to do them, too." All ages, and remember —
some dads who hate everything love books by the dear doctor.
We're Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury
"We're not scared," says this family as they trek through squishy-squashy,
squishy-squashy and some other places to find the bear. The building verse
(like "This is the house that Jack built") is fun for those 18 months and
up.
The Three Bears, by Byron Barton
Who's been sleeping in my bed? A bright, simple rendering that sticks to
the classic plot and dialogue. Those two and up (and maybe younger, if
you've been reading to them a lot) love the conflict and the tension.
Pooh's Parade, by A.A. Milne, illustrated by Ernest H. Shephard
Four board books in one package, fitted together jigsaw-style, each book
perfect for little fists to wrap around. Pooh, Tigger, Christopher Robin,
and Eeyore appear in tiny slices of life in the Hundred-Acre Wood — Tigger
figures out what he likes to eat, for example. Perfect for Pooh-lovers not
ready to take on the unedited versions.
Baby Faces: Peek-a-Boo, by Roberta Grobel Intrater
The very youngest babies love baby faces, and this book has one photo per
page — perfect. "I see you..." says whoever reads the book, then you study
the laughing-yelling-crying photos together.
My Aunt Came Back, by Pat Cummings
"My aunt came back from Bucharest. She brought me back a quilted vest." So
goes the chant as aunt and niece celebrate several trips to faraway
places, in rhymes ideal for the very young and their older siblings.
The Hungry Pig, A Fun Works/Wacky Farm Book
This is fun and sassy, but still singsongy and suitable for ages one and
up. "The hungry pig, he eats his breakfast slop. And when the farmer's
good and gone, he finds a doughnut shop" — that kind of thing.
Miss Spider's Tea Party: The Counting Book, by David Kirk
The expressive, kindly Miss Spider is glum because no one wants to take
tea with her. Counting couplets tell how she resolves the situation, with
rich oranges and yellows in the 2-D "animation."
