Research in my group aims to understand the large scale atmospheric circulation - what drives the patterns we see in different fields like wind, temperature, and moisture. What drives the variations of these fields? We aim to understand the "building blocks" of cross-scale interactions - how they work at a mechanistic level - and how these interactions affect the large scale patterns and variability.
We use a combination of data analysis - both from observations and models, numerical models - with a tendency towards the simpler end of the model hierarchy, and theory - including waves, shear instabilities, and turbulence in geophysical flows.
