"Two concepts govern the design of this project: the desire to integrate, enrich and extend the surrounding environment and neighborhood by virtue of the center; and to create a structure which gives maximum awareness and interaction of all the functions and facilities of the center to those within and without of the project."

Date of the competition: 1971

Architects: Moshe Safdie and Associates, Architects, in collaboration with 14 students from the School of Art and Architecture at Yale University.

Area: 66,890 sq. m. (interior), 16,200 sq. m. (exterior)

Unbuilt (the winning proposal, according to which the center was finally built, was that of Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano. Safdie's proposal won second place and a distinguished mention).
