"Mission to Mars: The Search for Water"

Abstract

"Follow the Water!" is the mantra guiding the search for present-day or fossil life on Mars, elsewhere in the solar system,
and beyond.  In my talk I will focus on two interrelated questions. Does liquid water, a necessary condition for life
(as we know it), presently exist at or near the Martian surface? Did Mars sustain a prolonged ocean environment in its
ancient past?I will review recent results from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor mission which directly address these questions,
and which have revolutionized our picture of Martian geology and climatic evolution.
