Pottery retrieved from the institute's excavations is brought back to our 160 meters squared restoration lab at Tel Aviv University. Of course, not all the potsherds we dig up find their way to the table. Each expedition's staff selects material from contexts where it seems clear that complete vessels can be put together. These are the pots that reach museum vitrines and popular magazines. But restoration is not only about restoring pottery for display; it's also about tracing depositional processes--how and where the broken sherds moved after breakage. This can provide important information about the settlement's history. Over the past year pottery from Megiddo, Jaffa, Beth Shemesh and Wadi Ara has been processed in the lab.
