IN ISRAEL

The government's legal adviser Elyakim Rubinstein was the guest speaker at TAU's annual Haim Avital Memorial Lecture. Dean of Law Ariel Porat chaired the evening.

The Joseph Kasierer Institute for Research in Accounting held its annual symposium. Jacob Perry, CEO of Cellcom and former head of the Israeli Secret Service, and Tal Yaron-Eldar, Income Tax Commissioner, were guest lecturers.

A new building for the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering - the Wolfson Building for Computer and Software Engineering - has been completed. It contains laboratories, classrooms and a 200-seat auditorium dedicated to the memory of Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt, Florida, USA. The building was designed by Israel Prize laureate Prof. Avraham Yasky.

The Department of Hebrew Literature, Entin Faculty of Humanities, is offering a new program in Hebrew and Israeli children's literature.

NEW PROJECTS

Two doctoral funds were established: the David Halperne Doctoral Fellowship Fund and the Yehuda Assia Doctoral Fellowships.

The Mania Maslansky Lectureship in Cancer Research was founded.

The Prof. Amos Perlmutter Fund for Strategic Research was established at the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies, donated by Ze'ev Schiff.

PRIZES AND APPOINTMENTS

The President's Award was presented by Prof. Itamar Rabinovich to TAU Governor George Bloch at the Howard Gilman International Conference in Hong Kong.

Assaf Zilcha was elected chairman of the Student Union, replacing Noa Glazer.

Prof. David Nevo of the School of Education has been appointed Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Education. He is the second faculty member to hold this position, the first being Prof. Hagit Messer-Yaron of the Fleischman Faculty of Engineering, who serves as the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Science.

Prof. Irad Malkin of the Department of History, Entin Faculty of Humanities, has been appointed Director of the Dan David Prize. He takes over from Prof. Gad Barzilai of the Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences.

Laury Hananel has been appointed the new Director of NECHES - the Student Union Economic Corporation. He replaces Zvi Cherner.

Dr. Mordechai Naor, a senior researcher at the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Center for Media of the Jewish People and editor of the periodical Kesher, is the recipient of the Sokolov Prize for Journalism.

Prof. Tamar Dayan of the Department of Zoology, Wise Faculty of Life Sciences, has been appointed Head of the Institute for Nature Conservation Research. She replaces Prof. Baruch Sneh, who has completed his term of office.

Joel Tauber, USA, and Alexander Yuhjtman, Argentina, were elected to the Board of Governors.

ABROAD

The Howard Gilman International Conference "China, Israel and the Jews" was held in Hong Kong with the support of the Hong Kong Jewish Community, the Consulate General of Israel, and the Center for Cross-Cultural Studies at the City University of Hong Kong. The three sessions were entitled "Historical, Religious and Philosophical Perspectives," chaired by Prof. Aron Shai, incumbent of the Shoul N. Eisenberg Chair, TAU Department of East Asian Studies; "The Modern Era: Jewish and Chinese Communities, Israel and China," chaired by Dr. Meir Shahar, also of the department; and "China, Hong Kong, Israel and the Middle East," chaired by Mr. Robert Dorfman.

The Committee of the French Friends of TAU chaired by the association's President Hugo Ramniceanu elected Patrick Getreide as Chairman of the Campaign. Mr. Getreide is CEO of Desk, a leading supplier of computer equipment.

A farewell party in honor of Israeli Ambassador to France, TAU's Prof. Elie Barnavi, was organized by the French Friends Association and hosted by Mr. Hugo Ramniceanu.. TAU President Itamar Rabinovich and Vice President Yehiel Ben-Zvi participated along with 130 guests and friends. Among the guests were Mr. Christian Poncelet, President of the French Senate, and Mrs. Dina Kawar, the Jordanian Ambassador in Paris..

COMING EVENTS

The 6th North American Conference, "A Light on the Middle East, the Media, the Economy" will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, on October 3-4, 2002.

The 2002/2003 school year will open on October 13, 2002.

The 12th European Regional Conference, held in cooperation with the Faculty of Management-Leon Recanati Graduate School of Business Administration, will take place at the Carlton Hotel, St. Moritz, Switzerland from January 23 to 27, 2003.
