The Vice President and Dean of Research and Development presides over the development and management of the University's research activities. He or she oversees the University's ties with governmental, public and commercial bodies that are involved with research and development both within Israel and internationally. He or she works to promote the infrastructure that supports the scientific endeavors of the University's researchers and strives to encourage the development of new subjects and fields of research that lie at the cutting edge of technology.

The Vice President and Dean of Research and Development is responsible for the effective operation of the Research Authority, and supervises the activities of external research centers affiliated with Tel Aviv University.

The Vice President and Dean of Research and Development is elected as Dean by the University Senate and as Vice President by the Board of Governors and the Executive Council for one term of four years congruent with the term of the Rector.

The Vice President and Dean of Research and Development also serves as Chair of the University Patents Committee. Likewise, the dean is a member of the Steering Committee, the University Academic Planning Committee and the University Executive Council. The current Vice President and Dean of Research is Prof. Hagit Messer-Yaron.
