The Sackler Faculty
of Medicine is one of
Israel's
leading health-care resources. It combines a cadre of 1,600 physicians
and scientists, and a physical plant centered at the
Tel
Aviv
University
(TAU) that reaches out to
encompass the central region of the country serving 40 percent of the
population of
Israel.
The Sackler Faculty of Medicine has grown over the years to meet the
needs of a developing
Israel,
whose population has grown over a short period of time. Meeting
Israel's
health needs has been achieved by adding programs in the allied health
sciences; by constantly upgrading undergraduate, graduate and
postgraduate medical education to keep pace with worldwide
developments by engaging in ongoing research that assures its place in
the mainstream of science and medicine.
Excellence in medical education, medical care and a broad approach to
health problems have been the aims of the Faculty since its inception
in 1964, when it became the major driving force in setting and
maintaining a high standard of medicine in the Tel Aviv area. The
Faculty has had a profound influence on the country's
health standards. It is responsible for the academic supervision of
six general medical centers, a rehabilitation hospital, psychiatric
and children centers in the greater Tel Aviv Area. The Sackler Faculty
of Medicine provides quality education to 770 students in the 6-year
Israeli Program, and 270 in the
New York State/American Program. This latter program was established
in 1977 through a charter of the New York State Department of
Education. The program admits students from throughout the
U.S.
into a 4-year curriculum.
The
Faculty's
building at the TAU campus houses teaching and research facilities for
the basic sciences and pre-clinical studies. Clinical studies are held
in the affiliated teaching departments of the hospitals in the greater
Tel Aviv area.
