National Laboratory for the Genetics
of Israeli Populations

The National Laboratory for the Genetics of Israeli Populations (NLGIP) was established in January 1995 by
the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities as the national human cell lines and DNA research biobank of Israel.

The NLGIP is located at the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, on the Tel-Aviv University campus. The laboratory is a biobank for human cell lines, representing the unique and large ethnic variation of the Israeli populations. The NLGIP focuses on collecting, establishing and maintaining human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines and matching DNA samples from healthy donors representing the various Jewish and Arab ethnic groups in Israel.

The human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines and DNA samples in the NLGIP collection may be used for research purposes only. Commercial use is not allowed.

The NLGIP follows the ELSI standards recommended by the Human Genome Organization. All donors are healthy adults who gave informed consent for research of their DNA and cell lines. Our activities are approved and supervised by the Institutional Review Board of Tel-Aviv University.

The NLGIP is an affiliate member of the USA NIH Pharmacogenetics Research Network (PharmGKB) and the European Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI).

Some of our human cell lines were contributed to CEPH Human Genome Diversity Cell Line Panel in France and to the Coriell Cell Repositories in the USA.

A presentation about the NLGIP activities is available here.
