Born in Tel Aviv in 1959, Dr. Loewenstein received her medical education at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, earning the M.D. degree 1984. She completed a residency in Ophthalmology in 1996 at the TAU-affiliated Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel, and moved to Baltimore MD for a research and clinical fellowship in Vitreoretinal disease in the Wilmer institute in Johns Hopkins university hospital. Upon her return, in 1999, she headed the Retina Unit in the Tel Aviv Medical Center, and in 2000 was appointed Chairman of Ophthalmology in that hospital. In 2002 she completed studies in health administration and earned the M.H.A. degree from the Recanati Business school in TAU.

Dr. Loewenstein 's research focused on diagnosis and treatment of retinal disease. Prof. Loewenstein maintains membership in numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Ophthalmology, the Macula Society (of which she received the most prestigious Rosenthal award this year), the American Society of Retina Sepcialists, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and is on the editorial board of several ophthalmology journals. She serves on several national and international committees in the field of ophthalmology and retinal disease. As of 2002 she was the head of the Board of Ophthalmology in Israel. At TAU, Dr. Loewenstein became Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in 2000. In 2006 Dr. Loewenstein was appointed as Vice Dean of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine.

Main research interest
Ophthalmology: drug toxicity to the retina; the development of model technology for early detection of macular degeneration; as well as novel treatment modalities for this disease.
