Behavioral Ecology deals with the contact point of Ecology, Evolution and Animal Behavior. It aims at understanding the adaptive value of behavior, with an emphasis on studying animals in their natural habitat or context, using experimental approaches combined with comparative and theoretical ones (for instance, optimization or game theory models). The course will present the foundations of Behavioral Ecology and will also survey some recent developments in this field. Outline: (1) Natural selection, Ecology and Behavior. (2) Testing hypotheses on the evolution of behavior. (3) Decision making and cost-benefit analysis in animal behavior. (4) Arms race and predator-prey interactions. (5) Resource competition and evolutionary game theory. (6) Life in groups. (7) Behavior of trap-building predators. (8) Animal personality and behavioral syndromes. (9) Sexual selection and behavior from male and female perspectives. (10) Social behavior. (11) Behavior of insect societies. (12) Animal communication.
