Dr. Hadar Aviram holds an LL.B. (magna cum laude), as well as an M.A. (criminology – summa cum laude) from Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and a PhD in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from University of California Berkeley, where she studied as Regents Intern and Fulbright Doctoral Fellow. Her dissertation, winner of the University of California Chancellor Dissertation Award, examines the formal and informal patterns in the way the military judicial system in Israel perceives and addresses deserters and conscientious objectors.
Dr. Aviram’s research interests are quite varied, and lie in the crossroad of law, sociology and criminology. Her research projects often combine quantitative and qualitative methods. Recent publications include a forthcoming book with Prof. Malcolm Feeley about the history of female criminality, a number of articles about conscientious objectors in American and Israeli law reviews, and a recent article from her project in progress, which examines political activism and legal consciousness in the polyamorous community.
