Israel Academic Network (ILAN) FAQ

What is the current topology of the national ILAN network?

In 1994, the ILAN backbone underwent an upgrade to 10Mb using new MAN (Metropolitan Area Network - DQDB) technology from Bezek. In 1997, the network was migrated to be SMDS based and in 1999 the network was upgraded to be ATM based.

Currently, there are 2 Bezeq ATM networks being used. One is called Magnet and runs at 155Mb/sec and the other is called Bezeqcom and it runs at 34Mb/sec (each university has a 10Mb/sec VC to the Bezeqcom network via a 34Mb/sec physical access line).

In addition, we maintain a backup Frame Relay network with 256kb/sec access lines to all campuses.
