Israel Academic Network (ILAN) FAQ

What are the rules for domain names under ac.il?

All universities, colleges and institutions of higher education should register under ac.il. The Internet Society of Israel has delegated responsibility for all ac.il domains to Machba, the inter-university consortium in Israel.

The following describes the set of rules Machba will use when allocating new domains under ac.il.

1. Any university, college or institution of higher education that has received accreditation, or is licensed or has a received a permit to operate and maintain an institution of higher education from the Council for Higher Education of Israel, is entitled to register a 3rd level domain under ac.il. We refer to such an institution as a "university" in the paragraphs that follow. The name selected must be either the institution's name, well-known abbreviation or nickname.

2. Any college or institution of higher education that has not received one of the above certifications, will be allowed to register a 4th level domain under ter.ac.il

3. Any organization that is either an association (Amuta) or corporation (Taagid) that is either owned, controlled or administered by a university is allowed to register a single 4th level domain under org.ac.il.

4. The name selected in all of the above cases must be either the institution's or organization's name, well-known abbreviation or nickname.

5. Any employee or unit within a university that is setting up a future conference will be allowed to register a domain name under the conf.ac.il domain. Only one name will be allowed per conference and the request must be specified with a fixed date when the 4th level domain can be removed. (i.e. hep99.conf.ac.il).

6. Any employee or unit within a university that is performing a long term project that involves more than one institution, will be allowed to register a 4th level domain under proj.ac.il (i.e. nasa.proj.ac.il).
