Israel Academic Network (ILAN) FAQ

What is Network Time Protocol (NTP) and where is it in Israel?

Network Time Protocol (NTP) provides the mechanism to synchronize timekeeping among a set of distributed time servers and clients. It uses a returnable-time design in which a distributed subnet of time servers operating in a self-organizing, hierarchical master-slave configuration synchronizes local clocks within the subnet.

In Israel, the primary time server (stratum 1) is ntp.ac.il which is connected to a cluster of atomic, radio and other clocks at the Division of Physical Standards of The National Physical Laboratory (Ministry of Industry and Trade) in Jerusalem.

The person responsible at NPL for all matters about the atomic clock is Mr. Moshe Bezalel (clock@vms.huji.ac.il) who has worked quietly and tiredlessly to get the Israeli atomic clock connected to the Internet.
