הקורס משמש מבוא ראשוני להכרת ההיסטוריה של מדינת ישראל בעשור הראשון. בקורס יידונו הקשיים והאתגרים שהציב המעבר מדפוסי הארגון והחברה היישוביים אל מוסדות המדינה משזו קמה. כן יוצגו בקורס בעיות היסוד שעמן התמודדו המדינה והחברה והפתרונות לבעיות אלה, כפי שבאו לידי ביטוי במדיניות הממשלה בעשור זה בתחומי העשייה המרכזיים. בקורס תידון אפוא מדיניות הממשלה בתחומי החוץ והביטחון, המשטר והפוליטיקה, העלייה והקליטה, הכלכלה, השיכון וההתיישבות, החינוך והתרבות ויחסי הרוב והמיעוט.

Israel: The first decade
In its first decade, Israel's history was dominated by intense and dramatic events. The 1948 war yielded both an Israeli military victory and a massive and yet unresolved Palestinian refugee problem – security issues were still a major concern long after the war had ended. Mass immigration reshaped the land. Logistical, political, and social challenges had to be met while a new nation was being built. Time and great effort were dedicated to the establishment of state institutions through an ideology called Mamlachtiyut, or statism. This course traces the manifestation of Israel's major security, political and economic struggles in the shaping of Israeli society.
