סילבוס בעיות נבחרות בחברה במצרים העתיקה

לקורס הזה שני מוקדים ספציפיים, וסטודנטים אמורים להשתתף בשניהם באופן מלא:

א. טקסטים מצריים על מגדר, משפחה וחברה
ב. טקסטים מצריים על יחסי מצרים עם הלבנט

בכל חלק של הקורס, נקרא ונסקור טקסטי מפתח לעומק. לאחר כמה שבועות של קריאת טקסטים משותפת, כל אחד ממשתתפי הקורס יבחר ויציג טקסט או קבוצת טקסטים, אשר ייקראו במלואם או בחלקם בכיתה, ויסביר כיצד טקסטים אלו מציגים ומעצבים סוגים שונים של גבריות ונשיות, או כמקור היסטורי ותרבותי להבנת יחסי מצרים – לבנט.

בחלק של הקורס שמתעסק במגדר ומשפחה נקרא, בין היתר, הקורס יסקור טקסטים ספרותיים, מנהליים, והיסטוריים, מכתבים אישיים, שירי אהבה וכתבי חוכמה.

טקסטים מצריים הם מקורות מרכזיים להבנת ההיסטוריה של כנען והלבנט. בקורס זה נחקור מספר טקסטים היסטוריים, ספרותיים ואוטוביוגרפיים, החל מהמפורסמים יותר (כמו קרב מגידו, סאנהת ו -וונאמון) ועד לאלו הפחות מוכרים, כמו למשל האוטוביוגרפיה של הדיפלומט חנומחותפ , כתובות מן המכרות בסרביט אל-ח'אדם, או הטקסטים המאגיים המצריים שבהם מופיעים אלי הלבנט.

Selected problems in Ancient Egyptian Society

This course will have two specific foci:
A. Egyptian Texts on Gender, the Family and Society
B. Egyptian texts on Egyptian relations with the Levant
In each part of the course, we will investigate key texts in depth. After several weeks’ reading and working on texts together, each participant will choose and present a text or group of texts, read all or part of it with the class, and talk about how these texts represent and configure different forms of masculinity and femininity, or the implications of this text as a historical and cultural source for Egypt/Levant relations.
In the gender part of the course we will read texts describing and forming different types of femininity and masculinity in ancient Egypt, particularly in family and social settings. Literary narratives, administrative and historical texts, religious texts and personal letters, love poems and wisdom teachings are all suitable topics for research within the confines of this seminar.
Egyptian texts are key sources for the history of Canaan and the Levant. In this part of the course we will investigate a number of historical, literary and autobiographical texts, ranging from the well-known (such as the Battle of Megiddo, Sinuhe, Wenamun) to the less familiar, such as the autobiography of the diplomat Khnumhotep, mining inscriptions at Serabit el-Khadem, or magical texts mentioning Levantine deities.)

This course demands text reading in the original Egyptian.
The course is open to advanced BA students who can read Middle Egyptian.
