Egyptian Gods Away from Home

The course focuses on the cult and role of Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses out of Egypt. Special attention will be given to the goddess Hathor, known also as 'The Lady of Punt', 'The Lady of Biblos', and the 'Lady of Turquise'. These epithets associate Hathor with countries and regions out of Egypt, where Egypt was interested to reinforce its influence, since the times of the Old Kingdom, but especially during the times of the New Kingdom. A similar case is that of the god Amun. Egyptian kings from Thutimes III built temples to Amun in Nubia in order to consolidate Egyptian position in the remote areas of the Egyptian empire. Moreover, in the times of the empire, the god Amun was considered to be the one under whose auspices the Egyptian king campaigned and fought. Thus, military success was understood as an expression of the divine power of Amun. The battle of Megido, and the Egyptian thanks giving to Amun will be studied as an example for these ideas.
