זהו הרעיון בבסיס 'טיעון הידע' של פרנק ג'קסון בזכות דואליזם פסיכופיזי, שפורסם בתחילת שנות השמונים, ואשר נמצא עד היום בלב המחלוקת הפילוסופית אודות גוף ונפש. האם טיעון זה מבוסס ועלינו לקבל את העובדה שעולמנו אינו חומרי בלבד? איזו תמונת עולם מתקבלת אם אנחנו מאמצים דואליזם? שמא הטיעון אינו מבוסס? אם כך, היכן הוא כושל? ומה כשל זה מלמד אותנו על התנסויות חושיות, על ידע בגוף ראשון אודותיהן, על מדעי הטבע, על רדוקציה בין-תאורטית, על גבולות ההבנה האנושית, ועל סובייקטיביות ואובייקטיביות?

The concept of mind in our times (b)

“Tell me everything physical there is to tell about what is going on in a living brain […], you won’t have told me about the … characteristic experience of tasting a lemon, smelling a rose, hearing a loud noise or seeing the sky. […] Therefore, physicalism is false.”

The idea expressed in the above quotation lies at the heart of Jackson’s ‘knowledge argument’ in favor of psychophysical dualism, which was published in the early 1980s and created one of the most interesting controversies in contemporary philosophy of mind. Is the argument sound, and we should believe that our world is not wholly material? How does the world look like from a dualistic point of view? Perhaps the argument is unsound. If so, where does it err, and what can we learn from this error about sense experience, first personal knowledge, natural science, inter-theoretic reduction, the limits of human understanding, subjectivity and objectivity?

The course is structured as guided reading in Jackson’s paper and other papers that shaped the controversy surrounding the knowledge argument.
