Philosophy and Translation

The seminar is about the interlacement of philosophy and translation, focusing on translation as an object of philosophical reflection, translation as a philosophic tool, and even philosophy itself as an activity of translation. We will concentrate on translation across cultures, translation between languages, historical eras and textual approaches, translation between text and image (cinema, photography, comics). The 'ingredients' of the seminar 'belong' to Indian and comparative philosophy. The questions which are to be discussed, questions of translation and identity, the limits of language, 'self' and its 'other', transcend the Indian context. Among other issues, we shall contemplate on oral philosophy vs. philosophy written and read, translation from experience to language in classical yoga, Neo-Hinduism as 'translation' between 'east' and 'west', and popular Hindi cinema as 'translating' from classical Indian philosophy on the one hand, and Western narratives on the other.
