3. "Art without Borders": a philosophical Exploration of Art and Humnity Chicago University Press, 2009

What Is Art? A Comparative Approach to the World’s Art

This course has three textbooks, two brief ones in Hebrew and a long one in English. All three are in the library. These textbooks are:

1. Birds, Elephants, Apes and Children (Tziporim, Pilim v’Omanim Acherim), Am Oved / Xargol), 2006
2. Spontaneity in Art (Spontaniut b’Omanut), Am Oved, 2006
3. Art without Borders: A Philosophical Exploration of Art and Humanity, Chicago University Press, 2009

1 takes up the interface between prehuman and human art, as displayed in the singing of birds and the drawing and painting of elephants, apes, and young children. It asks repeatedly, “Is this art?” The final chapter is on play as self-rewarding activity.
2 begins with the subject of spontaneity in art and life. Its later chapters are on spontaneity in Chinese calligraphy; in the spontaneity of children’s art as it affected the work of mature artists; in the art of the mad and its effects on the work of sane artists; in chance or chance-influenced art; in the art of tricksters, clowns, and similar modern artists; and in the rise and fall of artistic inspiration.
3 The successive chapters are “An Open Aesthetics,” “Selfless Tradition,” “Egocentric Innovation,” “Intersecting Worlds and Identities,” and “The Common Universe of Aesthetic Discourse.”

Classes will be devoted mostly to discussion of the week’s reading. Each week each student is expected to write a brief essay on some subject in the week’s assignment. Students will be subjected to mutual criticism, that is, during the year one of each student’s essays will be distributed to all the other students to react to. At the end of the year each student is expected to write a longer essay on some relevant subject.
