סילבוס לייבניץ, יום וקאנט: סוגיות בפילוסופיה של הטבע

בקורס נעיין בתרומותיהם של לייבניץ, יום וקאנט, שלושה מחשובי הפילוסופים של המאות ה-17 וה-18, למהפכה המדעית של התקופה ולפילוסופיה של הטבע. נעיין הן בתרומות הקונקרטיות שלהם למדע החדש המתגבש והן בהשלכות הפילוסופיות שנגזרו לדעתם מהמפכה המדעית.
המהפכה האינטלקטואלית המודרנית הציעה שינוי רדיקלי של אופן החשיבה האריסטוטלי המסורתי. את התפיסה האיכותית-תכליתית של עולם מוגבל בהיקפו שהארץ במרכזו החליפה תפיסה כמותית-מכנית של עולם פתוח ובלתי-מוגבל שהארץ הינה אך כוכב נוסף בו. שינוי זה, כמובן, לא התרחש ברגע מסוים אלא היה תהליך ממושך שהוגים רבים נטלו בו חלק ושלווה במחלוקות וקשיים קונצפטואליים ניכרים. בכמה מאלה נתמקד בקורס. נתבונן במושג הכוח של גוף בתנועה ובהתגבשות הרעיון של חוקי שימור במדע, במחלוקת סביב מעמדו וטבעו של החלל, בשאלת מקומם של הסברים תכליתיים במדע החדש וביומרה להסביר באופן מכני את התפתחות היקום כולו. כמו כן נעיין בעצם היתכנותה של היומרה המדעית לספק הסברים רציונליים לעולם.

Leibniz, Hume, and Kant: Themes in Philosophy of Nature

The course explores the contributions of Leibniz, Hume, and Kant, three of the greatest philosophers of the 17th and 18th centuries, to the scientific revolution of the period and to the philosophy of nature. We shall look into their contributions to the new forming science and into the philosophical consequences they drew from it.
The modern intellectual revolution suggested a radical shift from the traditional, Aristotelian world view. The teleological-qualitative conception of a limited universe with the earth at its center was replaced by a mechanistic-quantitative view of an open universe in which the earth is yet another star. This shift, of course, did not take place at an instant but was an extended process, in which many thinkers took part and significant conceptual difficulties and controversies have occurred. We shall focus on some of these issues in the course. We shall consider the notion of the force of a body in motion and the formation of the idea of conservation principles in science, the controversy concerning the nature of space, the question as to the place of teleological explanations in the new science and the ambition to mechanically account for the evolution of the whole universe. We shall also reflect on the very possibility of the scientific pretension to provide rational explanations to the universe.
