סילבוס הפצעה והסבר מדעי

מטרת הקורס היא לבחון ולדון במידת הלגיטימיות של מספר סוגי הסברים הנמצאים מחוץ לזרם המרכזי של הפילוסופיה של המדע העוסק בהסברים מדעיים. בכדי ליצור בסיס טוב לדיון, נתחיל בתשובות לשאלות בסיסיות כגון מהו הסבר מדעי, מה בין הסבר לתיאור, מהי חשיבותו של הסבר למדע ועוד. בשלב השני יוצגו לעומק (בהסתמך על טקסטים של המפל ואופנהיים (Hempel and Oppenheim) ווסלי סלמון (Salmon), דיוויד לואיס (Lewis) ועוד) מספר מודלים של הסברים מדעיים תוך בחינת היחסים או ההיקשים עליהם הם נשענים (מודל ההסבר הסיבתי ויחס הסיבתיות, מודל DN וההיקש הלוגי).
באותו אופן ותוך השוואה למודלים שהוצגו, נברר מהו יחס ההפצעה (Emergence) וכיצד הוא יכול, אם בכלל, לשמש בסיס להסברים עבור תופעות שאין להן, נכון להיום, הסבר משביע רצון (למשל תודעה, חיים).
בחלק האחרון של הקורס ננסה לבדוק את מידת הלגיטימיות של הסבר טלאולוגי. הסבר טלאולוגי עושה שימוש במטרה או בסוף (לפעמים נקרא גם סיבה סופית) על מנת לתת תשובה לשאלה 'למה' התרחשה תופעה. בחלק זה של הקורס נסתמך על טקסטים של פילוסופים כגון אריסטו,לייבניץ וקאנט כמו גם על ספרות עכשווית העוסקת בהסברים טלאולוגיים (סטולצנר Stצltzner).

Emergence and Scientific Explanation
The aim of this course is to examine and discuss the legitimacy of several types of explanations residing outside the mainstream of the philosophical discussion concerning scientific explanations. To create a solid foundation for discussion, we will begin with basic questions: what is a scientific explanation, what is the difference between an explanation and a description, what is the role of explanations in science etc.
Following that, several models of scientific explanations will be introduced (relying on thinkers such as Hempel and Oppenheim, Wesley Salmon, David Lewis and others), focusing mainly on the relations or inferences these explanations are based on (causal model and causality, DN model and syllogisms).
In the same manner and through comparison with the other models, we will examine and define Emergence and question its compatibility as a basis for scientific explanation; this type of explanation can be than used to explain such phenomena as consciousness and life, which, as of yet, have no satisfactory explanation.
Following that, we will try to examine the legitimacy of teleological explanations, which use the 'telos' - the purpose or simply the end (sometimes referred to as the final cause) - to answer why such and such phenomena occur. In this last part of the course we will read texts of Aristotle, Leibniz and Kant as well as contemporary texts concerning teleological explanations (Stצltzner).
