פרדוקסים אינם רק שעשוע או קוריוז אינטלקטואלי. את הטענה שכל פרדוקס רציני מצביע על בעייה פילוסופית עמוקה נדגים בשיעור זה ע"י בחינת פרדוקסים בתחומים שונים: פילוסופיה של החלל והזמן )הפרדוקסים של זנון), תורת ההכרעה )הפרדוקס של Newcomb), לוגיקה ופילוסופיה של הלשון )פרדוקס הערימה), תורת האישוש )פרדוקס העורבים והחידה החדשה של האינדוקציה) והמטפיזיקה והרציונליות של רגשות )פרדוקס הרגשות ה"עקשניים).

Paradoxes and their Philosophical Significance: B.A. course
Paradoxes aren’t just an intellectual curiosity. We will illustrate the claim that every serious paradox points to a deep philosophical problem and its solutions by studying paradoxes in different areas: the philosophy of space and time (Zeno’s paradoxes), the theory of rational choice (Newcomb’s problem), logic and the philosophy of language (the Sorites paradox), the theory of confirmation (the new riddle of induction and the paradox of the ravens) and the metaphysics and rationality of emotions (the paradox of “recalcitrant” emotions).

Prerequisite: (recommended) an introductory course in logic.
The grade will be based on an end of term exam.
