להמצאת הדפוס במאה החמש-עשרה היו השפעות מרחיקות לכת על האדם, החברה והתרבות בעולם המערבי, בזיקת גומלין אל תהליכים אחרים שהתחוללו באותה תקופה. החברה היהודית מיהרה לאמץ אף היא את הטכנולוגיה החדשה, שחוללה גם בקרבה שינויים חשובים ביותר. עולם האסלאם, מסיבות שונות, נמנע מלאמץ את "ההעתקה המלאכותית" עד למאה התשע-עשרה, אך משנכנס הדפוס, הוא גרם גם בעולם האסלאמי מהפכה של ממש. בשיעור יידונו התמורות באוריינות, בסוגי הספרות הנקראת ובקהלי הקוראים בשלוש התרבויות, וכן בהשלכות של תמורות אלה על החינוך, השלטון והתפתחותן של תרבויות לאומיות.

Print and Change in the Christian, Jewish and Muslim Worlds

The invention of the printing press in fifteenth-century Europe had far reaching implications for man, society and culture in the Western world, and these were closely linked to other major developments in that period. Jewish society quickly adopted the new technology, and it also witnessed great changes as a result. The Muslim world, for a variety of reasons, refrained from accepting the new invention until the nineteenth century, but when printing finally entered Islamic society it caused there a veritable revolution. In the course we shall discuss changes in literacy, in literary genres, and in reading patterns in the three civilizations, as well as developments in education, government and national cultures as a result of the impact of printing.
