Jews, Pagans and Christians writing History in Antiquity

The seminar explores different forms of historical writing in Ancient Civilizations, focusing on the question of history-writing as a cultural phenomenon. The readings will look at different historiographical approaches, and will introduce the students to the techniques, philosophies and ideologies of ancient historiography. The broad chronological framework will span early traditions of historical writing in the Jewish and Graeco-Roman cultures of the Near East and the Mediterranean world to the new religious historiography of Late Antiquity. Comparison of Jewish, pagan and Christian historiography will enable an examination of the questions of how and why history is written.
