התרגיל יתמקד בסדרי חינוך, בתכני הלימוד ובדרכי ההוראה שהיו מקובלים בחברה היהודית המסורתית במזרח אירופה במאות י"ח-י"ט, תוך תיאור מוסדות החינוך השונים לילדים ובראשם ה'תלמוד תורה', ה'חדר' והישיבה, על ההווי המיוחד שנכרך בהם. בין מוקדי הדיון: ספרי הלימוד לילדים ולנערים ותכניהם; דמותו של המלמד; בחינות, מלקות, הווי ומשחקי ילדים; הביקורת המשכילית על ה'חדר' ועל סדריו.

Small and Cozy? The Heder and the Education of Children in Eastern Europe

The course will focus on the education system for children, learning content as well as the teaching methods which were implemented in Eastern European Jewish traditional society, especially during the 18th and 19th centuries. We shall review and study the various educational institutions for children, such as the Talmud Torah, the Heder and the yeshiva, with attention to the special folklore of each. We shall discuss issues such as the different images of the melamed (the teacher), the examinations, the punishments and children’s games and folklore. Special attention will be given to the modern criticism (Maskilic and secular) of the traditional system.
