סילבוס העולם היהודי בעת החדשה

העידן המודרני, משלהי המאה ה-18 ואילך, הוא תקופה של זעזועים נמרצים בתולדות האוכלוסיות בעולם. לצד תהליכי התיעוש, העיור וההגירה התפתחו אידיאולוגיות זהות חדשות, יהודים נדרשו להגדיר את זהותם מחדש ועמדו בלחצים ומשברים שלא ידעו לפני-כן. בקורס נתמקד באירועים ובתהליכים מעצבים בתולדות המקומות שבהם חיו היהודים, בתנאים החדשים שלהם הצטרכו להסתגל ובמעמדם בתנאים החדשים. הדיון בתקופה סוערת זו יחולק לשניים: שיעור שיועבר כולו על-ידי המרצה ויכסה את ההיסטוריה עד ראשית המאה ה-20 (חלק זה יתקיים בסמסטר א') ותרגיל שיתבסס על עבודות התלמידים סביב ההיסטוריה המשפחתית שלהם במאה ה-20 (חלק זה יתקיים בסמסטר ב').

בשיעור נעבור ממוקד תמורות אחד לאחר, מחברת המהגרים האמריקנית לצרפת של המהפכה, משם לגרמניה ולרוסיה, מקום מושבם של רוב יהודי העולם בראשית התקופה המודרנית, ונסיים באזורי האסלאם: באימפריה העות'מאנית ובצפון-אפריקה הקולוניאלית. בכל אחד ממקומות אלה נעמוד על השפעת התמורות על מעמד היהודים, על שאלות זהותם ומגמות הדמוגרפיה וההגירה שלהם. לצורך ההשוואה, נלמד במסגרת זו במה היה גורל היהודים דומה לזה של מיעוטים אחרים, ובמה נבדל מהם.

בחלקו השני של הקורס ייעשה מאמץ לקשור את החומר הנלמד, ואת ההיסטוריה היהודית במאה ה-20, להיסטוריה המשפחתית של הסטודנטים, שיתבקשו להציג את קורות משפחותיהם ולנתחם לאור התהליכים והמושגים שנלמדו בקורס. דרך ההרצאות והפרזנטציות "נכסה" בקורס כמעט את כל פזורה היהודית. במסגרת העבודות האישיות נתרגל עבודה עם המקורות המסורתיים העומדים לרשותו של ההיסטוריון וכן נתנסה במקורות חדשים, פרי המהפכה הדיגיטלית.

The Jewish World in the Modern Era

The modern era, from the end of the 18th century onwards, was a period of intense upheavals throughout the world. Alongside the processes of industrialization, urbanization, and immigration, new ideologies developed, and Jews were forced to redefine their identity amidst pressures and crises they had never before known. This course will focus on the events and processes formed in the histories of the places in which Jews lived, on the new conditions to which the Jews needed to adapt themselves, and on their new status. Discussion of this tumultuous period will be divided into two sections: (1) lessons led entirely by the lecturer, which will cover the history of the period up to the beginning of the 20th century and will take place during the first semester, and (2) an instructive exercise based on the students' work on their family histories during the 20th century, which will take place during the second semester.

In this course we will move from one center of change to another: from the American society of immigrants to Revolutionary France, from there to Germany and Russia, the place of residence of the majority of the world's Jews at the beginning of the modern era, and we will conclude with the Islamic regions—the Ottoman Empire and colonial North Africa. In each of these regions, we will examine the effect of societal changes on the Jews' status, questions of Jewish identity, and their demographic and immigration trends. For the sake of comparison, we will use this framework to study in what ways the Jews' fate was similar to that of other minority groups, and in what ways it differed.

In the second section of the course, we will endeavor to connect the material taught during the first semester, and the Jewish history of the 20th century, to the family histories of the students, who will be asked to present and analyze their families' stories in light of the processes and concepts studied in the course. Through the lectures and student presentations, the course will touch on nearly all areas of the Jewish Diaspora. Within the framework of the individual projects, we will practice working with the traditional sources at the historian's disposal, as well as examining new sources—the fruit of the digital revolution.
