סילבוס סוגיות בהיסטוריה תרבותית של העיתונות: מן הפמפלט של ה- 17 ועד לבלוג האישי

הסמינר מבקש להתמקד בהיבטים חברתיים, תרבותיים ופוליטיים וכן, בהשלכותיו של השינוי הטכנולוגי— הדפוס, מכונת הדפוס הממוכנת והמדיומים האלקטרונים השונים— על ההיסטוריה של העיתונות החל מן המאה השמונה ועד לעידן האינפורמציה הנוכחי. בסמינר יידונו סוגיות מפתח להבנת היסטוריה זו, בראש ובראשונה: הזיקה בין הליברליזם להולדת העיתונות. כמו כן, יחסי כותבים-קוראים בעידן הדפוס; עיתונות פופולארית ואמנציפציה פוליטית; עיתונות ועליית הלאומיות המודרנית; עיתונות, מהפכה ורדיקליזם; העיתונות המטרופולינית במאה התשע-עשרה או, העיתונאי כאתנוגרף; יחסי ספרות-עיתונות; על קוראות וכותבות: נשים ועיתונות; המאה התשע-עשרה והולדת כתב-העת הפופולארי; מן הטלגרף ועד לעיתונות המשודרת: זמן, מקום ובידור; תקשורת כאובססיה. ולבסוף, עיתונות בעידן האינטרנט: פני יאנוס של העיתונות המקוונת; בין קוראים לכותבים ולהפך: בלוגים ורשתות חברתיות כמדיום לעיתונות "מלמטה" (participatory Journalism); המקרה של אינדימדיה (Indymedia Journalism) ובהקשר זה, ננסה לעמוד על התוקף והמשמעות, לטוב ולרע, הגלומה ב"הכרזת העצמאות" הלא רשמית של אוהדי ודוברי המדיה-החדשה: !We are the media.

Issues in the History of Journalism: from 18th century Pamphlet, to the 21st century Blogosphere

This seminar looks at the social, cultural, and political aspects, as well as the implications of technological innovations on the history of journalism, since the 18th century until the current information age. We will be discussing some key issues such as: Liberalism as the cradle of early journalism; the relationships between readers and writers in the age of the printing-press; popular press and political emancipation; journalism and nationality; journalism, radicalism and revolutions; 19th century metropolitan journalism and the role of the journalist as an ethnographer; women-read, women-write: journalism and women; the 19th century and the birth of the popular periodical; broadcasting journalism: the Telegraph, the Radio and the Television. In the final part of the seminar we shall examine the complex relationships between journalism and the Internet. We shall focus on issues such as: the Janus face of the online magazine; blogs and social-networks as a medium for 'journalism from below'; participatory journalism: the Indymedia case, and in this regard we shall try to clarify, or to refute, the significance which was embodied in the unofficial 'declaration of independent' used by the new-media protagonists: "we are the media!"
