סילבוס מבוא לתולדות רוסיה בתקופה האימפריאלית (1700- 1861)

השיעור יעסוק באירועים מרכזיים ותהליכי יסוד שהתרחשו ברוסיה מהפיכתה לאימפריה בעלת השפעה בינלאומית בתחילת המאה ה-18 ועד לשחרור הצמיתים ב- 1861. בתקופה זו נערכו ברוסיה רפורמות מרחיקות לכת שהביאו ל"אירופאיזציה" של המדינה ועיצבו את פניה של החברה הרוסית; במהלך הקורס יוצגו ההשלכות הפוליטיות, החברתיות והתרבותיות של רפורמות אלו. נבחן את היחסים הבינלאומיים של רוסיה בתקופה זו, כולל השתתפותה במלחמות נגד נפוליאון, והשפעתן של מלחמות אלו על התגבשות הזהות הלאומית הרוסית. בקורס יושם דגש על המאפיינים של התרבות הרוסית כפי שהם התהוו בתקופה פורמטיבית זו. כמו כן, ייבחנו הסיבות וההשלכות של ביטול הצמיתות כמאורע פורץ דרך למודרניזציה הכלכלית והתפתחויות חברתיות ופוליטיות חדשות.
הקורס ייבנה על הרצאות; בסיומו תיערך בחינה שתתבסס על ההרצאות והביבליוגרפיה שתינתן במהלכן.

Introduction to the History of Imperial Russia (1700 – 1861)

This introductory course focuses on significant events and fundamental processes that took place in Russia between the years 1700 and 1861. Russia became an empire at the beginning of this period and for the next two centuries had a powerful impact on European geopolitics. The end of this stage of Russian history was marked by the emancipation reform of 1861, which liberated more than 23 million serfs. During this period Russia underwent other profound reforms, leading to "europeanization" of the state and the re-shaping of the society. The political, social and cultural consequences of these reforms will be discussed presented in the framework of the course. Russia's international relations, including its participation in the Napoleonic Wars, and the subsequent influence of these wars on the formation of Russian national identity will constitute another important aspect of the course. Further, the course will reveal the main characteristics of modern Russian culture that emerged in this seminal period of history. The concluding part of the course will be devoted to an examination of causes and consequences of the emancipation reform as an event that opened the way to economic modernization and to new social and political developments in Imperial Russia.
The course will consist of frontal lectures; the final exam will be based on the content of the lectures and the bibliography provided there.
