סילבוס שירה רומנטית Romantic Poetry

This course offers selected readings of poets who gradually came to be grouped together as the major voices of English Romanticism: Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley, and Keats. We shall examine the complexity of fundamental Romantic concepts such as memory, poetic inspiration, the Sublime, Self and Nature, childhood, personal and political freedom, and the role of language. Besides close analysis of individual poems, the course will discuss some of the historical, political and cultural contexts of Romantic ideology and aesthetics, and will consider the influence of Romantic poetry on future generations.

Requirements: one midterm paper, short class assignments, a final exam.

Texts: students should purchase the following book: English Romantic Poetry: An Anthology, ed. Stanley Appelbaum (1996). Additional poems will be provided for photocopying.
