מדוע ומאיזו תקופה אנשים מספרים את סיפור חייהם בגוף ראשון? חוקרי האוטוביוגרפיה חלוקים בנוגע לתאריך לידתו של ז'אנר זה. הסמינר ישלב קריאה בטקסטים אוטוביוגראפיים קדומים (הווידוים של אוגוסטינוס מהמאה ה-5, סיפור חייהם של גיבר דה נוז'ן ושל אבלר מהמאה ה-12) ויעמוד על האיפיונים המשתנים של הז'אנר לאורך הזמן ובמיוחד ברנסנס האיטלקי עם יצירותיהם של ז'רום קרדן ובנבנוטו צ'ליני. נסיים עם דעיכת הווידוי הדתי ועלייתו של הז'אנר החילוני והפוליטי של ספרי הזיכרונות, ז'אנר ייחודי לתרבות הצרפתית. הסמינר ישלב קריאת יצירות בשלמותן וקריאת מאמרים ביקורתיים (בצרפתית לרוב) על האוטוביוגרפיה כסוגיה ספרותית וכתופעה חברתית המותנית בזמן ובמקום.

Autobiography as a Literary and Social Phenomenon (In France)

Why and for how long have people told their stories in the first person? Scholars of the autobiography disagree on when this genre was first employed. The seminar will combine the reading of early autobiographies (Augustine’s Confessions from the 5th century, the stories of the lives of Guibert de Nogent and Abיlard from the 12th century) and will consider the changing characteristics of the genre over time. Special attention is paid to the Italian Renaissance and the works of Jerome Cardan and Benvenuto Cellini. The course closes with the ebb of the religious confession and the rise of the secular, political genre of Memoires that is unique to French culture. Seminar participants read complete works as well as literary criticism (mostly in French) on the autobiography as a literary issue and as a social phenomenon dependant on time and place.
