תשוקה, מלנכוליה, מימזיס: בלזק, אליוט, זולא

הסמינר יבחן קטגוריות של פעולה ברומנים וסיפורים קצרים של שלושת הסופרים הקנוניים ובסרטים שחוקרים את המקור של הפעולה או של אי האפשרות לפעול. הסמינר יאבחן את ההבדל בין סוגים שונים של פעולות אנושיות ואת ההקשר שאליו הן משתייכות. הסטודנטים ילמדו להבדיל בין פעולות שמקורן בדחף (passion), ובתשוקה (desire), וכן ישאלו הסטודנטים מה תפקידה של האינטנציונאליות בביצוע פעולה ולבסוף ינתחו הסטודנטים פעולות שמקורן בחשיבה ואת האופן שבו הן מיוצגות בטקסים ובסרטים שילמדו. תפקידו של המוח הלא-מודע ושאלת הקשר בין הלא-מודע לאחר יעמדו במרכז הדיון. הדיון יתמקד גם בשאיפה למימזיס או ריאליזם, זהות, ואוטונומיה. לקריאת הטקסטים ולצפייה בסרטים יתלוו לימוד תיאוריה של ספרות, ביקורת, קולנוע וטקסטים פסיכואנליטיים.

Desire, Melancholy, Mimesis: Renoir, Balzac, Eliot, Zola

The seminar will examine categories of action in novels and short stories of the authors above and in films that study the origins of action and the inability to take action. Students will learn to distinguish between different kinds of actions that emerge from passion or desire and will examine the role of intentionality in acting. As the course winds up students will analyze actions that follow from thinking and how these are represented in texts and films. The role of the unconscious mind and the question of the relation of the unconscious to otherness will take center stage in the discussion. We will also focus on the aspiration to attain mimesis or realism, identity, and autonomy. The reading and viewing of films will be supplemented by studying literary and film theory, and by reading psychoanalytical texts.
