”פרוגרס” ו”אבולוציה” הן שתי הנחות-על מרכזיות בתרבות המאה ה19 ומיוצגות האחת בשיח על החברתי, האחרת בשיח על הטבע החי. במהלך המאה שני מיני השיח משפיעים ומושפעים הדדית ונשזרים זה בזה . הסמינר ידון בשזירה זו בהקשר תהליכי התיעוש, התגבשות מוסדותיה של מדינת הלאום הריכוזית ושלוחותיה הקולוניאליות וכינונם של שדות שיח ופרקטיקות חברתיות חדשים.

'Progress' and 'Evolution' in the nineteenth century.
Both "Progress' and "Evolution" had served as principal underlying suppositions of 19th century culture, and were initially represented the first in the discourse on the social and the latter in the discourse on living nature. Throughout the 19th century these two discourses had interacted and mutually influenced one another. The seminar will discuss these webs of influence and interaction, the constitution of new social practices and discourses, within the context of processes of industrialisaion, the crystallysation of the 'nation state' and its centralising institutions and colonial enterprises.
