היסטוריה אינטלקטואלית א`: מהעולם העתיק עד למהפיכה המדעית (

בימינו נראית הגישה המדעית-טבעית לבאורן של תופעות טבע ולעיצובן של מערכות טכנולוגיות כמובנת מאליה. לא כך היו פני הדברים בתרבויות הקדם-הלניסטיות של הים התיכון והמזרח התיכון. תופעות טבע נבחנו, הוסברו, חושבו מתמטית, ובחלקן אף נובאו בהצלחה במסגרת תובנות שהיו יותר דתיות ומיתולוגיות מאשר מדעיות במובן המקובל עלינו כיום. מכונות עוצבו ונבנו מאז שחר ימיו של האדם, אבל לפני התקופה ההלניסטית אין עדויות לנסיון שיטתי לבאר את פעולתן על בסיס עקרונות תיאורטיים כלליים, בעלי זיקה חלקית לפחות לחוקי טבע יסודיים. לאור דברים אלה, מטרת הקורס היא להציג מבוא לתולדות החשיבה המדעית כהיבט של ההיסטוריה האינטלקטואלית במסגרת תרבותית מוגדרת, תוך התמקדות בהתפתחותה של גישה מדעית-רציונאלית הן לחקר תופעות הטבע והן לניתוחן ועיצובן של מכונות במהלך התקופה ההלניסטית.

To us, nowadays, it seems obvious to consider both natural phenomena and industrial design in terms that rest on a foundation of rationalized natural science. However, this was not the case in the Mediterranean and Near-Eastern cultures of the Ancient World. Natural phenomena were considered, accounted for, mathematically computed, and even successfully predicted in terms that were more religious and mythological than naturalistic. Machines had been designed and built since the early days of mankind, but there is little or no evidence before the Hellenistic period of any systematic attempt to relate their operation to a set of explicitly enunciated theoretical principles that are at least partially based on basic laws of nature. In view of this, the main purpose of the course is to provide an introduction to the history of scientific thinking by examining the emergence, primarily in the Hellenistic period, of a rationalized approach to the study and explanation of natural phenomena, as well as to the design and analysis of man-made machines.
